 HILDREN are an essential
part of the Emmanuel community. We welcome children of all ages to our liturgies to worship, to play, and to
grow with us. During the Sunday Eucharist, parents are encouraged to bring their children forward to receive
communion or a blessing. The rectors and vestry of Emmanuel have made the growth of our educational programs
for children a major initiative.
Sunday School is offered for children 5 and older at 11:00am.
Child care is provided for younger children each Sunday from 10:00am to 12:30pm.
In Advent 2001, the Children’s Education Commission introduced a new curriculum
for Sunday School. Godly Play is an extremely successful curriculum widely used in this diocese and
among other denominations throughout the United States and Canada. Developed by Episcopal priest, author, and
teacher Jerome Berryman, Godly Play is an innovative way to think about religious education. The
curriculum invites children to enter into biblical stories, parables, and sacraments — to find their own
place in the life of the Christian community. It offers space for them to wonder and to assign meaning to the
stories and traditions being handed down to them. It provides children and adults with opportunities to interpret
these lessons creatively and to integrate their meanings into their daily lives.
