Emmanuel Music

Emmanuel Church and Emmanuel Music have formed a search committee to identify a music director to follow in the tradition of founder Craig Smith and Acting Artistic Director John Harbison.   Emmanuel Church is represented on the committee by Peter Johnson, Jim Oleson and Jim Bradley (alternate).  In addition, Fred Weber, as senior warden, and Pam Werntz, as priest-in-charge, are ex-officio members.
The search committee wants to hear from the congregation about its hopes for the church music program and the music director.  We will have coffee hour discussion about hopes for the music program on April 20 and May 4.   We look forward to hearing your initial thoughts. You may also submit your thoughts on the search via email.
J. S. Bach wrote over two hundred sacred cantatas. They were performed during Sunday services at Leipzig’s St. Thomas Church, where Bach served as Kapellmeister from 1723 until his death in 1750. Emmanuel Church has continued the tradition. During each Sunday’s 10:00am service, from September through May, Emmanuel’s liturgy includes a cantata as well as other great works of music. The 2007–2008 Bach Cantata Series runs from September 16th through May 11th.

INCE 1970, the Orchestra and Chorus of Emmanuel Music have presented the cantatas of J. S. Bach during the Sunday services at Emmanuel Church in Boston’s Back Bay. Emmanuel Music is currently the only organization in the world performing the cantatas as Bach intended.
