Our Sunday services begin at 10:00 am in the
Sanctuary.
- On Sunday, March 14, Emmanuel Music will present Arnold Schoenberg's De Profundis (op. 50b). At coffee hour, our Music Director John Harbison, Rabbi Howard Berman, and the Rev. Pamela will discuss this work with us.
Scored for six-voice a cappella choir, this dramatic conception of Psalm 130 was Schoenberg’s last completed composition.
As he approached his seventy-fifth birthday in 1949, he declared his intention to complete his career composing only sacred music. Shortly before coming to the United States in 1934, he had converted back to Judaism, confirming with this act what had been clear within two of his largest works, Moses and Aron and Jacob’s Ladder, his devotion to Hebrew Scripture.
For translations
of the texts of Bach's cantatas by Pamela Dellal along
with notes by Craig Smith and other conductors, please
follow the links from the calendar
of the season's Sunday offerings.

Bereavement Group
- During Lent this group will meet at the church on Thursday afternoons from 2:00–-3:30pm beginning on February 25. It is open to people experiencing loss or who have a friend or family member dealing with a life-threatening illness. We are fortunate in having as leader Nadja Gould, who is a parishioner at Emmanuel and an experienced therapist. She has worked with people with terminal illness, in hospice care, and with those who have lost loved ones. Life teaches us that grief does not have a timetable. It can be helpful to share a recent loss or one of long standing with others in a safe, confidential setting. For more information or to register for the group, please contact Pam Werntz (Werntz.Emmanuel@gmail.com) or Nadja Gould (nadjagould@gmail.com) or 617-924-4438.

Inquiring Minds
in March
- Inquirer's classes are one of the staples of congregational life in Episcopal parishes. They serve at least two purposes: they are a way to deepen connections between people within a parish; and they are a way to grow in understanding of some questions of faith. If you are feeling new to the Episcopal Church and want to learn more about our practices, whether you count your time at Emmanuel in weeks or in years, please consider joining our Inquirer's Class for four Thursdays in March (4, 11, 18, and 25), from 6:30-9 pm. A simple supper will be provided. Registration is required and there will be some homework! Please contact Pam Werntz for more information at werntz.emmanuel@gmail.com.

Spirituality & the Arts: Emmanuel Center's
forum series
- As part of the programs of the newly established
Emmanuel Center, the interfaith partnership
between Boston Jewish Spirit and Emmanuel Church,
our two congregations will co-sponsor a series
of "talk back" discussion forums for this season's
productions of Boston's famed Speakeasy
Stage Company. These in-theater events follow
the second Sunday afternoon performances of
each play, and will feature commentary by the
Rev. Pamela Werntz and Rabbi Howard Berman,
and the cast and directors of the performance.
The discussions will focus on spiritual, ethical
and social issues raised by the plots and themes
of each of these varied productions.
All performances are at the Calderwood Pavilion
of the Boston Center for the Arts, 527 Tremont
Street in the South End. Special discounted
tickets ($35) will be available by calling Jim
Torres at Speakeasy (617) 482-3279. Callers
should identify themselves as members of Emmanuel
Church or BJS, and can pick up tickets and pay
at the door the day of the performances.
